Can heartbreak actually damage your heart?

There is a rare condition called takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or broken heart syndrome, where a surge of stress hormones temporarily stuns the heart muscle. It is uncommon and usually recovers, but it is real. If you have severe chest pain, breathlessness, or anything that scares you, see a doctor promptly.

Is emotional pain really the same as physical pain?

They overlap in the brain but are not identical. Imaging research shows social rejection activates regions involved in the distress of physical pain, which is why heartbreak aches in your body and not just your thoughts. Your pain is neurologically real, whatever anyone says about "just feelings".

Why do I feel physically sick after my breakup?
